The Egyptian army was better disciplined but ill-used. Since the death of Alexander the Great in 325B.C, the Eastern countries had been ruled by the descendents of Alexander’s generals. Egypt had since that time been ruled by the Macedonian Ptolemies, and ruled not from Memphis but from Alexandria at the delta of the Nile. The native Egyptians were denied citizenship of this city and its language was Greek. Its army was composed mainly of Macedonian mercenary troops, using native troops in an auxiliary role.
Ptolemy ignored the Egyptian gods and took up those of Greek and Rome. Thus the high priests would not crown their rulers as Pharaohs, and they unwittingly denied themselves the wealth of Egypt - vast hidden hordes of gold in temple treasuries. They were ignorant of the accepted rule that the Pharaoh owned the land and everything on it. Adopting the titles of Kings and Queens of Egypt the dynasty was riddled with palace revolutions and coups.
Cleopatra VII was sent to Memphis in childhood when her father remarried. She had cultivated the High priest of Amon-Ra, and been trained in its mysteries. She could also speak all of Egypt’s dialects. When her father died civil war broke out and the people and Caesar backed her claim to the throne that she took as Pharaoh, daughter of Isis. She also inherited 250 years of revenue kept for Pharaoh by the priests and gained a native army fanatically loyal to her and with a military tradition spanning 3,000 years.
Cleopatra adopted the Macedonian Pike for her soldiers – both her archers and infantry were superb. Her cavalry consisted of good horsemen and native auxiliary camel archers. Her troops fought in regiments under good control by native captains with standards blessed by the priests. Her best troops were the Royal archers, which had been maintained by the previous monarchs to deal with lions and crocodiles and to act as an internal police force. These archers were the most sought after in the known world and Rome would later use them as auxiliary archers for another two hundred years.
The Egyptian army’s main weakness was that, having been neglected for two centuries, her army was new and lacked the esprit de corps the same period had given the Romans. Given time and equipment it may have matched those of Rome, certainly Cleopatra intended to model her vast army on Roman organizational lines.
